5 Common Misconceptions About Collision Insurance:

1. Your insurance company can dictate where your collision repairs are completed - You legally have the right to choose where you would like to take your vehicle for repairs. Some insurance companies will have a list of shops they have agreements with, however, you do not have to take their advice.
2. You insurance company is right, always -  The shop and your insurance company will both make estimates and the outcomes are not always similar. If the insurance company’s estimate is lower it doesn’t mean it’s a correct estimate or that you will have to cover the difference. It is normally up to the shop to negotiate with your insurance company.
3. Comprehensive coverage protects me from collision damage - Comprehensive coverage usually ONLY covers damage caused by things other than collisions like a tree falling on your car. You will need collision coverage as part of your policy.
4. Accident wasn’t my fault. My insurance rate won’t go up -  Fault is always assigned in an accident but if your insurance company isn’t reimbursed by the other driver’s insurance it may affect your rate.
5. Collision coverage pays for damages in any accident -  Collision coverage pays for damage caused to your car in an accident that was your fault. If you’re the one who caused the accident your liability coverage should cover the other drivers damages.
